Claudio Katz - Imperialism today: a critical assessment of Latin American dependency theory

Brazilian economist and sociologist Ruy Mauro Marini (1932-1997) was a prime exponent of what became known as dependency theory, an attempt to explain the systemic unequal relations of the Latin American countries in particular with the developed economies of the imperialist “North.” He was a close collaborator of, among others, Vânia Bambirra and the recently-deceased Theotónio Dos Santos. Marini’s best-known work, first published in Spanish in 1972, is Dialectics of Dependency.

Debt - both public debt and private debt - has become a major concern of economic and political leaders. In The Making of the Indebted Man, M. Lazzarato shows that, far from being a threat to the capitalist economy, debt lies at the very core of the neoliberal project. Through a reading of Karl Marx's lesser-known youthful writings on John Mill, and a rereading of writings by F. Nietzsche, G. Deleuze, F. Guattari, and M. Foucault, Lazzarato demonstrates that debt is above all a political construction, and that the creditor/debtor relation is the fundamental social relation of Western societies. Debt cannot be reduced to a simple economic mechanism, for it is also a technique of "public safety" through which individual and collective subjectivities are governed and controlled. Its aim is to minimize the uncertainty of the time and behavior of the governed. We are forever sinking further into debt to the State, to private insurance, and, on a more general level, to corporations. To insure that we honor our debts, we are at once encouraged and compelled to become the "entrepreneurs" of our lives, of our "human capital."

Джордж Рюде - Народные низы в истории 1730-1848

Историк-марксист Джордж Рюде в ходе своих  исследований открыл и изучил целую серию народных движений в Англии и во Франции в XVIII первой половине  XIX в., о которых в науке до этого либо ничего не было  известно, кроме эпизодических упоминаний даже в самых  подробных работах, посвященных этому периоду, либо  если они и были известны, то рассматривались вне широкого контекста социальной истории. Научная заслуга  Рюде в том и состоит, что он сумел осмыслить цепь внешне разрозненных и разнохарактерных, стихийных и локальных взрывов социального возмущения и протеста  народных низов голодных бунтов, крестьянских восстаний, ранних форм рабочего движения как глубокую  закономерность завершающей фазы переходной эпохи от  феодализма к капитализму. И эту закономерность он проследил параллельно на документальном материале, касающемся двух стран Англии и Франции, в каждой из  которых исторический процесс в этот период имел свою  специфику. В результате своих исследований Рюде вписал совершенно новую, страницу в социальную историю двух стран на ранних этапах промышленного переворота. В настоящее издание, выходящее в свет под общим названием «Народные низы в истории», включены две работы Рюде: «Толпа» в истории. 1730-1848» и «Идеология и народный протест».
