John Boughton - Municipal Dreams

In every city and town across Britain, there are swathes of housing provided by the state - from the 'homes for heroes' built after the First World War to the tower blocks of the sixties, in styles ranging from arts and crafts to brutalist. As so much of this housing is privatised and some demolished, historian John Boughton recovers the story of the hopes of the men and women who dreamed of good homes for all and the travails such ambition suffered.  Municipal Dreams presents an alternative history of the United Kingdom. This history begins in the slum clearances of the late nineteenth century and the aspirations of those who would build anew. He looks at how and why the state's duty to house decently its people became central to our politics.

Фигура Дёрдя Лукача (1885-1971), крупнейшего венгерского философа и литературного критика, деятельность которого повлияла на многие направления современной европейской мысли, на протяжении уже восьми десятилетий привлекает к себе внимание исследователей новейшей философии во всем мире. Библиография работ, ему посвященных, насчитывает не одну тысячу публикаций. Вместе с тем не все этапы жизненного пути Д.Лукача изучены с одинаковой полнотой. Особенно много «белых пятен» связано с длительным московским периодом творческой деятельности этого выдающегося философа (1929-1945 с перерывом в 1931-1933 гг., когда Лукач жил в Германии). И, пожалуй, наименее проясненным, вызывающим наибольшее количество предположений и домыслов эпизодом биографии Д.Лукача можно считать его арест в конце июня 1941 г. и двухмесячное пребывание в застенках НКВД, завершившееся неожиданным освобождением в конце августа.

Ursula Hackett - America's Voucher Politics: How Elites Learned to Hide the State

What explains the explosive growth of school vouchers in the last two decades? In America's Voucher Politics, Ursula Hackett shows that the voucher movement is rooted in America's foundational struggles over religion, race, and the role of government versus the private sector. Drawing upon original datasets, archival materials, and more than one hundred interviews, Hackett shows that policymakers and political advocates use strategic policy design and rhetoric to hide the role of the state when their policy goals become legally controversial. For over sixty years of voucher litigation, white supremacists, accommodationists, and individualists have deployed this strategy of attenuated governance in court. By learning from previous mistakes and anticipating downstream effects, policymakers can avoid painful defeats, gain a secure legal footing, and entrench their policy commitments despite the surging power of rivals. An ideal case study, education policy reflects multiple axes of conflict in American politics and demonstrates how policy learning unfolds over time.

Chelsea Szendi Schieder - Coed Revolution: The Female Student in the Japanese New Left

In the 1960s, a new generation of university-educated youth in Japan challenged forms of capitalism and the state. In Coed Revolution Chelsea Szendi Schieder recounts the crucial stories of Japanese women's participation in these protest movements led by the New Left through the early 1970s. Women were involved in contentious politics to an unprecedented degree, but they and their concerns were frequently marginalized by men in the movement and the mass media, and the movement at large is often memorialized as male and masculine. Drawing on stories of individual women, Schieder outlines how the media and other activists portrayed these women as icons of vulnerability and victims of violence, making women central to discourses about legitimate forms of postwar political expression. Schieder disentangles the gendered patterns that obscured radical women's voices to construct a feminist genealogy of the Japanese New Left, demonstrating that student activism in 1960s Japan cannot be understood without considering the experiences and representations of these women.

In Cold War Anthropology, David H. Price offers a provocative account of the profound influence that the American security state has had on the field of anthropology since the Second World War. Using a wealth of information unearthed in CIA, FBI, and military records, he maps out the intricate connections between academia and the intelligence community and the strategic use of anthropological research to further the goals of the American military complex. The rise of area studies programs, funded both openly and covertly by government agencies, encouraged anthropologists to produce work that had intellectual value within the field while also shaping global counterinsurgency and development programs that furthered America’s Cold War objectives. Ultimately, the moral issues raised by these activities prompted the American Anthropological Association to establish its first ethics code. Price concludes by comparing Cold War-era anthropology to the anthropological expertise deployed by the military in the post-9/11 era.
