While many politicians resented providing temporary support for working Americans during a national emergency, few had misgivings about the huge cash giveaways to capital from state coffers and the massive upward transfer of wealth during the pandemic. Jen Pan analyzes how giveaways, tax breaks for industry, and PPP loans largely went to line the pockets of bosses, and why, despite decades of “trickle down economics,” policies that merely beat back labor and cut taxes for the rich have failed to lead to sustained economic growth.

Why do “ecosocialists” and degrowth activists so often express rhetorical support for labor but refuse to listen to workers' input on the issue of climate? Phillips argues that a true solution to climate change is impossible without labor, as workers are uniquely positioned to apply the kind of pressure to capital needed to result in sustainable change. Labor alone has the technical knowledge and collective power to forge a future that avoids catastrophe.
