I don't think it's about magic. I think it is about mapper vs AR.

I don't think it's about magic. I think it is about mapper vs AR.
AR for me is better because you can use the repository pattern or not, you can have a clean AR.

AR is cool if u have a project like a blog, but it is a headache if you have a project with a few hundred independent parts)

You can't get rid of save() method.

So repository isn't truly guarding all the saving / obtaining logic.

It requires discipline.
