The HPE SimpliVity 380 4000 series utilizes SSDs that have a lower average DWPD. In order to guarantee a three-year life on the 4000
series SSDs, a new feature called Media Lifecycle Manager was introduced in v3.7.3. This feature is always running and observes the rate of
write I/O on the disks. If Media Lifecycle Manager detects a DWPD trend that will result in a life span of less than three years, it will
incrementally throttle VM and backup write throughput to ensure the lifetime writes will not be exhausted prior to the three-year warranty
period. Utilizing this approach, there is less risk of disk failure from inadequately sized infrastructures or implementations that are used more
heavily than designed. Alerts will be raised within the vSphere client whenever Media Lifecycle Manager is actively throttling write
throughput. Read I/O does not affect the life of SSDs, and therefore will never be throttled by Media Lifecycle Manager, nor will write
activities associated with maintaining data high availability.
