I am deeply involved in printed electronics, 3D printing, robotics, microcontrollers and several other industries in the sense that I have shipped product and know many people. I attend many events and one of my companies runs events on those kinds of subjects. The kinds of problems I saw in the software industry are practically unheard of in these other industries.
For example, at our events we typically get 25% female attendees and they behave the same as the men and we have never had a single issue in 20 years of operating. When I attended an F# event at Jet.com in New York I asked one of the women why they were dressed like eskimos and she said "to try to avoid being sexually assaulted or raped". She explained that she was only talking to me because someone she knew and trusted had advised her that I wasn't dangerous. Then the women at the event proceeded to tell me about the number of rapes at recent software events. I think they listed seven rapes in the space of two years. One of the women who had been attacked lived just a short drive from where I lived at the time. I was absolutely shocked.
As I say, I am deeply involved in several other (hardware) industries and the software industry is definitely an outlier in this regard. These kinds of dysfunctional people are not normal. This kind of behaviour is ubiquitous only in the software industry and it should not be tolerated.Jet.com in New York I asked one of the women why they were dressed like eskimos and she said "to try to avoid being sexually assaulted or raped".
