The difference is miniscule \u2014 creating a tar from a snapshot downloaded via git involves osc service; downloading a tar created by the remote side likewise. (one is osc service dr, the other osc service lr download_files). Using the .gz archive in Source: has the verifiability guarantee against uncanny changes (cf. https://en.opensuse.org/SourceUrls ) which locally created tars do not give.
So it's not so much about liking one or the other, there is an objective reason at hand.
