■ The process to enter Japan ■
•Only Japanese Nationals and Residents (those who have re-entry permits) are able to enter Japan.
•New Visa are NOT being issued, however, some Embassies are processing documents in preparation. Please contact your local Embassy directly. until 07 Feb 2021. This could be extended.
Visas holders issued under special exceptional circumstances [May include family and specific occupations such as professors and medical staff.] are required to apply for an appropriate visa at Embassies or Consulates.
.
■1. Tourist Visas:
Tourist visas are NOT being issued. This may change closer to April or with Olympic preparations.
■2. Residents in Japan wanting to leave and return:
No longer need to apply for the emailed reentry permit. Reentry permit issued on departure at the airport. {PCR testing depends on your destination and airline.}
■3. For residents outside of Japan wanting to return:
Residents with valid residence permits who left before the pandemic and yet to return can now re-enter without being subjected to any reviews of the reasons to return. There is longer a requirement to apply to immigration authorities for documents confirming that re-entry is allowed.
■4. For residents outside of Japan wanting to return with ‘expired’ re-entry documentation:
Returnees can seek re-entry permission even if their visa or re-entry permit has expired while abroad.
The Justice Ministry announced earlier this year that non-Japanese residents who left before the end of August but were unable to return before the period of validity of their re-entry permits expired would also be able to seek re-entry under special circumstances (humanitarian reasons.)
The Immigration Services Agency has said that people whose re-entry permits expired after they left Japan temporarily will be issued a certificate of eligibility (COE), a document confirming they meet the conditions for arrival and are eligible for a visa. To receive the COE, those who are planning to re-enter must complete procedures at their nearest Japanese Embassy or consulate.
This also includes those whose visas expired completely while abroad and people with valid residence cards who were exempted from obtaining an ordinary re-entry permit but were not able to come back to Japan within a year of their date of departure.
■5. Business travel: ⚠️Currently suspended
Foreign nationals with valid residence statuses in Japan can also apply for re-entry permission under guidelines for business travellers. (14 Quarantining and no public transport is still required)
■6. Short-term (7-days) Business travel from Japan: ⚠️Currently suspended
{This is different to the business track.}
7-days business travellers with residence permits in Japan (and Japanese nationals) can seek re-entry without quarantining upon return to Japan, regardless of their travel destination.
★But the exemption will only apply to those who travel overseas on business for 7-days or less.
★If mandatory quarantine is required at the travel destination, the quarantine period is not counted as part of the business trip.
★The returnees employer or visa sponsor must sign a document assuring that the traveller will abide by all safety regulations during their trip and on return (ie not using public transportation, reporting their health condition to the authorities, for a 14-day period after returning. To avoid quarantining on returning to Japan an itinerary of two weeks in Japan must also be submitted.
★Business travellers must provide a negative 72hrs PCR test. However, those travelling for seven days or less can take the test on arrival.
