why do i get

i have

and im linking to ffmpeg.so

CPP names do get garbage glued onto them

yea, that was the problem i had, i needed extern "C" in BOTH the header and the C file

#ifdef __cplusplus
extern "C"
#endif

// ...

#ifdef __cplusplus
}
#endif

seems you used cpp compiler for your C files. Otherwise that extern “C” makes no sense.
