Hello Mike,
Sadly, Apple has officially dropped eGPU support for Thunderbolt 1 and Thunderbolt 2 Mac’s like yours in 10.13.4 and above. Also, Nvidia drivers are not officially supported by Apple at this time, and only select AMD graphics cards are plug-and-play with MacOS 10.13.4+ at this time. See our eGPU/OS information here.
That being said, other customers have reported successfully using third-party workarounds to bypass these limitations.
They can be found on
eGPU.io under the software tab > MacOS.
These workarounds are designed for expert users, and are not officially supported for use by Apple, nor by Sonnet at this time.
Furthermore, how well an application takes advantage of external GPU acceleration is application dependent. There are video editing programs like DaVinci Resolve that take great advantage of the eGPU, while others surprisingly do not. We expect more and more applications to do a better job as time goes on. You may want to check with the software developer of your specific application to see if they can take advantage of external GPUs.
Ultimately, we would recommend using a thunderbolt 3 equipped computer with compatible graphics card.
We apologize for the inconvenience.
Regards,
Andy
